"Hang those bastards who left the bore uncovered!" was my first reaction when I first heard of Prince, a five year old boy from Ambala who was rescued by the Army when he accidentally had fallen in an open bore. Few weeks later, an eighteen months old boy in Katni in MP too fell and was brought out with a huge effort. These incidents happened during the first half of this 2007.
This Saturday again, a six year old boy named Karthik fell in an open bore in a small village in Andhra Pradesh. After about 48 hours of futile struggle, the mining workers brought the boy out dead. Remember there was no army involved in the rescue act.
These incidents showcase the half work done by our media and administration which I believe is more dangerous than the actual bastard who had dug up and left the bore uncovered.
Coming to the point, television channels showed live pictures of the rescue act by the army and newspapers alloted front pages. Millions prayed for the kids to come back safely. After the successful operation, in the case of Prince, the local MLA took photographs with the rescued boy while the newspapers and Television channels and millions of people heaved a sigh of relief.
However, they stopped there. No one thought "What next?"
Neither the governments (Central and State which I believe are more concerned about being in power than people who gave them the power) took measures to cover the open bores nor the television and newspapers which have place for all trivial matters such as Abi-Aish wedding tried to take things forward.
Interestingly, the government didn't try to bring to justice the diggers in any of the cases and moreover paid a compensation of Rs.2 lakh to the parents of Prince. In case of Prince, the cost of army's effort was put around Rs. 50 lakh. Why the hell should huge amounts of public money go waste just because of some uncivilized buggers' sheer negligence?
Even after Karthik's death no newspaper or News channel reported any immediate measures by the govt. Where the $$$$ are the commissions, political leaders which bark regularly on petty issues? I believe such issues show our lack of civic sense and common sense. And it is high time the diggers are made to pay the compensation themselves and are handed over some stringent punishment else we might end up seeing our near and dear ones in a deep shit.
I may be a bit harsh but I am fed up with this system for which I am responsible in my own way.
