Robot - A giant leap technically

Movie Review - (Rating -3.5/5)

To all people who are ignorant of the technical brilliance, strength and box-office stamina of South Indian movies, Rajini’s Robo is the answer.

All credit goes to Shankar for his imagination and near perfect execution. Robot is arguably India’s Avatar and Shankar India’s James Cameroon. With never seen before special effects (animatronics), which of course cannot be truly termed international, but certainly a giant leap as far as Indian cinema is concerned, Robot leaves you spellbound for most part of the 3-hour visual extravaganza.

The best part of the movie is it goes straight to the point. It is all about a robot and the director never deviates from it. Unlike his previous flick Sivaji, Shankar refrains from forced comedy and focuses more on showcasing Robot’s abilities and reflexes. As the robot too is Rajinikanth, it's more like good Rajini vs bad Rajini. This also lessened dependency on animatronics and gives you feel of Shankar's Jeans or other movies where the hero plays dual role. That's brilliance for you. But this brilliance slowly fades away toward the end as he overuses/misuses the technology, making it an average flick for the multiplex audience.

True to his superstar tag, Rajinikanth is the movie’s strength. Rajini is super cool as scientist and robot. Rajini’s action as corrupted robot is a treat to watch. Shah Rukh Khan and Kamal Hassan, who rejected the project, are sure to regret now. The only complaint is Rajini’s dances, which are really disappointing, especially in the song Kilimanjaro. But Aishwarya Rai seems to have reserved her best dance moves for Robot. She is gorgeous and her dance movements in I Robo and Kilimanjaro are amazing. She brings grace, grandeur and completeness to this high-budget movie.

A R Rahman’s music is of international standards in the first half, but becomes unbearable in the latter part of second half. It’s too loud and the background score during the action sequences seems disconnected.

The climax could have been made interesting rather than going berserk with hundreds of robots forming different physical structures. The director could have taken a cue from The Lost World Jurassic Park on how to derive maximum impact from an alien character in a movie. The scenes where the dinosaur creates havoc in the city were so carefully executed that the audience crave for more. But Shankar goes out of control and creates huge trouble for our senses. Despite the breathtaking visual effects, the climax is surely a punishment.

My top scenes:
1. Robot posing like goddess Durga during a tiff with local goons
2. Robot’s confrontation with his creator to win Aishwarya Rai
3. Corrupt robot recharging when electricity is switched off and the way it finds Rajinikanth (human) among hundred similar looking robots
4. The delivery scene before interval
5. Robot’s explanation of why God exists

Robot is not a must watch but I surely recommend just for Shankar's brilliant effort.

Thanks for the detailed info, will watch out for the climax.

Good one...haven't watched the movie yet but happy about the balanced review rather than normal all praises mode that people take...Ab toh dekhni hin padeegi movie :)

Is this review rrom a budding director's perspective / an audience? Either way, good to know that it's worth watching once.

I liked the movie and it is worth watching in the theatre. The charaterization was perfect. Rajini as a Robot was great. The make-up and the constumes were good.

Rajini couldn't dance well(maybe he is now old) but Aishwarya was worth watching. I totally agree with Vinay on the Climax. It was a drag.

i liked so much this movie. and for more tollywood movie news watch at http://www.supergoodmovies.com

The gods instructed Pharroh to give the Jews all that gold as temptation, and it worked.
So unlike Pharroh, but an effective corruptor which was responsible for the 40 years of warmongering under Joshua. This caused another host of problems to befall the Jewsish people as well.

Even as peasant farmers we could be lulled::Good weather, bountiful harvests, etc. This is what old-world preachers were good for.
This stereotypical preacher had classic preaching styles:::Loud, damnation-fueled teachings. Contrast to today, preachers who are lulling the Damned into cruise control. The old-world style was important to snap people out of complacency. Unfortunately, in today's enviornment people consider this style insulting, and they lose a precious message designed for the favored of yesterday.

I speak of how The Beast has changed the country and the world with Californication. Whereas 20 years ago the young women used to ridicule homosexuality now they find it acceptable. Come the next generation the norm may be experimentation.
Not in the South. The Southern man has retained even more time, consider homosexuality an abomination and reject bi-racial unions, rightfully so. Unfortunately, much like the immigration issue the gods use hated to accomplish the region's value system among the masses.
Understand the Matrix/reality duality::::For every issue the gods have their REAL reason for creating an issue. In the case of the SOuthern man it is because they have the conbination of favor/disfavor which allows them to maintain the god's conservative stance embraced by humanity throughout time.
Of course the giveback in the SOuth would be elements like overconsumption of alcohol, abandoning the gods for NASCAR Sunday, tattoo freaks violating the body the gods gave them in their image. Pure favor it is not:::What they gain in a decent value system they lose elsewhere. The fact the gods preyed upon the Southern man with a drug-driven, junkie-laden brilliant regional rock bands is a bad sign. The perpetual nature of country music is another:::Rock is dead. Too many of these rednecks live in ignornace and feel their perpetual music genre is a sign of favor. Quite the opposite is true.
I have repeatedly illustrated the frequency of "reverse positioning". This is yet another.

The United States is a dumping ground for the disfavored. THis was how it was used during European immigration, this is how it is used today.
The Japanese Earthquake/Tsunami of 3/11/11 was actuslly a good sign for the people. Alarming because it came decades after their most recent admitted atrocities during WWII, at least they will experience corrective punishment, whereas the United States won't be as lucky.
Russia too enjoyed corrective punishment for the 1980 invasion of Afghanistan.
THere is something about this country. Interferring/injuring the Afghan people incurrs he god's wrath. It cost the SOviets their protection of communism. Now the gods have leveled the playing field among the last few white peoples who still enjoyed it on their way to a homogeneous global enviornment. If I am right about the United States we won't be as lucky. When we go down it will be for good, and there will be no recovery.
Yes, the clone host fake politicians have been plannign for this for decades. Ronald Reagan turned a $1 trillion Federal debt into $6 trillion at the end of his Administration. Much like W in Iraq, this served to terminate the favor of a group of people. Reagan just didn't have to do it with violence as W did, but he did do it against white people, which says something.

The gods will adhere to their positioning, immoral or not.
This illustrates an aspect of their pathology which people should consider quite frightening:::They will destroy and use someone but abandon obligation with a clear conscious. And they will do the same to each and every one of you.
