It seems our Hindi film industry has run out of new ideas and story lines, and it is evident from the number of remakes of old Hindi classics that have hit the screens during the last 16 months. As thought by many, most of them have been poor imitations and sank without a trace (ex: Umrao Jaan, Varma ki Aag, Don, etc).
Hindi film producers have also been attempting to remake successful films in South and Hollywood. Uh! Hollywood has often been the primary source (open source) for most Indian directors. In a mad rush to imitate their Hollywood counterparts, Hindi film producers/directors have not only changed the shooting spots to Singapore, Malaysia, South Africa, US, etc., but also are copying the crux of their movies and customizing them to suit the Indian audience errrrrrrr.. NRIs. Some of the films such as D2, Krrish, Murder, etc., are clear indicators of this growing trend. With India having no stringent copyright laws, many Indian producers are getting away with this crime.
These days, we rarely get to see films depicting true Indian lives. All characters are either foreign returned or settled outside India. Is the remake trend a result of lack of creative story writers or the safe play strategy by the producers? The industry will be encourage to think on its own only when more number of lawsuits (similar to the one filed by Sony pictures against the makers of the film Partner) are filed against the copycats.
This said, there have also been some great movies in the recent past. But they are like flashes in the pan (Lagaan, RDB, Swades, etc). But are these enough? No! so,
Dear producers across India, there are hundreds of young and talented story tellers and creative directors languishing outside the movie studies. Please evaluate and encourage them. I sincerely believe that most of them have the capacity to take Indian movies to international audience and make us proud.
Hope the current scenario changes very soon.
